From what I know, gold leaf can get very pricey. You might try one of those home improvement stores to see if they deal in faux finishing techniques. There's something else you might try. Some years back in one of the modeling magazines, they had an article on how to paint realistic metal finishes using what was called Metalizer paints. It was impressive seeing a model plane painted in various metal shades just like a real plane. At the time, such paints were only available in small quantities for use with airbrushes. See if any auto body shops, especially those that do custom work, might be able to help out with any info. Painting might be cheaper than actual gold leaf and much easier to apply.
